Creating new partnerships among governments, private industry, community
and environmental groups, NOAA has devised programs for protection of threatened fish populations through the adoption of long-term strategies to rebuild sustainable fisheries. We recognize, however, that protecting fisheries requires helping communities to adapt to the disruptions that come with these transitions.
NOAA's Office of Sustainable Development and Intergovernmental Affairs has therefore taken the lead in providing a meaningful package of economic relief to communities.
Sustainable Fisheries Program
The NOAA Office of Sustainable Development provides support to the President's
Council on Sustainable Development and focuses on issues related to sustainable
fisheries in US waters and the development of Marine Aquaculture.
NOAA's Sustainable Development office works with communities and local
officials in the Northeast, Pacific Northwest and the Gulf of Mexico to find
sustainable solutions to mitigate the effects of depleted fish stocks.
