As part of the effort to rethink systems of industrial production, both to improve environmental quality, reduce resource consumption, and create growing opportunities for meaningful employment in a green economy, the Office of Sustainable Development and Intergovernmental Affairs was one of the early federal partners supporting research and development of Eco-Industrial Development. We helped fund the creation of the first Eco-Industrial Park at the Port of Cape Charles, Virginia, and have been active in supporting an international network of Eco-Industrial Development Projects based at the Cornell Work and Environment Initiative, as well as working with the Presidents Council on Sustainable Development to establish the intelectual framework of eco-efficiency which guides this research.
