Economic activities often result in unintended and undesirable environmental and social consequences when the price of goods do not include environmental externalities, or where common property leads to incentives to individuals for over exploitation of resources. This is especially true in renewable resources such as fish stocks or the assimilative capacity of nature to absorb pollutants, as regeneration depends on the quantity and quality of such factors as habitat, genetic diversity and other critical resources. All of these factors are impacted by commercial activity as well as secondary impacts from urban development and other stresses.
