In pursuit of NOAA's strategic goals, particularly to "Sustain Healthy Coasts" in the U.S., we understand that the development of sustainable coastal communities is critical. Sustainable development proposes that economics, the environment and social equity issues must be in balance if to serve the long range interest of citizens. The NOAA Office of Sustainable Development and Intergovernmental Affairs (SDIA) serves this NOAA objective in several ways, including our support of NOAA Administrator Dr. D. James Baker's membership in the President's Council on Sustainable Development (PCSD). <>
